10. RUN (Πληροφορίες για την σειρά)
HBO’s romantic dramedy actually started out as one of the year’s best shows, which only doubled our disappointment when it ultimately went off the narrative rails. Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson had crackling chemistry as Ruby and Billy, two exes who agreed they’d drop everything and board a cross-country train together if they ever texted one another the simple word, “Run.” But their thrilling, heady reunion got bogged down in too many twists, turning the show into a crime drama we didn’t expect or want, and the series finale delivered one of the year’s most unsatisfying, perplexing conclusions.
9. NEXT (Πληροφορίες για την σειρά)
Full disclosure: This was a last-minute entry, because at least one of our editors was kind of into the early episodes and wanted to give the benefit of the doubt. Alas, the past two weeks have made clear that the Fox drama has no narrative structure, it almost defiantly refuses to gain any momentum, and one too many characters are pure plot devices (see: Paul’s daughter who repeatedly makes the wrong judgement call). NEXT had a potentially provocative premise, and a cast that simply deserved better.
8. CONNECTING…
It wasn’t that NBC’s quarantine comedy was poorly acted, or that we didn’t like the characters. In fact, if it had been a normal sitcom set in any other time and place, we’d probably enjoy it quite a bit. But with the coronavirus pandemic still wreaking havoc, nearly 300,000 deaths recorded in the United States and no end in sight to our masked, quarantined, socially distant lifestyles, Connecting simply aired way, way too soon. Perhaps one day, we’ll want to reflect on how our lives changed during this time — but Connecting‘s attempt to make sense of this horrid year was hasty, clumsy and often quite tone-deaf.
7. BROKE
Many a sitcom has proven that you can have good fun with pretentious characters (Frasier is listening…), but this drab, quarter-baked CBS comedy did the reliably great Natasha Leggero and Jaime Camil no favors, saddling them with stock archetypes and bland jokes. The character description for Pauley Perrette’s Jackie, meanwhile, seemed to be simply “concert shirt.”
6. THE SINNER (Πληροφορίες για την σειρά)
Season 3 of USA Network’s anthology drama managed to take two of TV’s most charismatic actors — Matt Bomer and Chris Messina — and completely sap them of all charm, by way of absolutely leaden material. The Sinner‘s “whydunit” approach to storytelling has worked for the show before, but we found it hard to care about Jamie and Nick’s mysterious history, weighed down as it was by interminably boring scenes and a narrative that spun its wheels for eight episodes.
5. AVENUE 5 (Πληροφορίες για την σειρά)
In space, no one can hear you laugh… especially when the jokes are duds. An HBO space comedy from the Veep creator starring Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad would have to work overtime not to be funny, right? Alas, despite its impressive pedigree, it did.
4. RATCHED (Κριτική για την πρώτη σεζόν)
We could rant at length about how misguided Netflix’s revisionist take on the Cuckoo’s Nest villainess was, or how it played like a rejected American Horror Story season, or how punishingly dreary and laughably campy it all turned out to be. (Sharon Stone as a monkey-toting femme fatale? No, thank you.) But we’ll just save time and offer up a one-word review: Ratched was wretched.
3. SPACE FORCE (Κριτική για την πρώτη σεζόν)
Steve Carell starring in a goofy comedy from The Office‘s Greg Daniels? Sign us up! Actually, on second thought, don’t: This Netflix misfire, with Carell as the head of the newly formed military branch known as Space Force, has to rank as one of the year’s biggest TV disappointments, with a grade-A cast falling victim to tepid jokes and a wildly uneven tone. “Failure to launch” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
2. TOO HOT TO HANDLE (Κριτική μπορείτε να δείτε εδώ)
This profoundly stupid Netflix reality competition commanded far too much of our attention in April, back when the idea of a no-touching experiment actually felt timely instead of merely exploitative. But even that shred of relevance wasn’t worth the number of brain cells we lost watching these hot dumb-dumbs try (and fail) to keep their hands to themselves.
1. LABΟR OF LOVE
“Though touted as an exploration of the procreative dilemma facing modern women, the Fox reality show never rose above its Bachelorette-seeks-sperm-donor premise. And the fact that Kristy and Kyle, her ultimate pick, broke up after a few months — well before the show even aired! — makes Labor of Love fertile ground for any and all criticism.”
